Things I’ve Learnt at University So Far

York minster

I’ve nearly finished my first year at the University of York, and although I promised regular updates it turns out that university is too much fun and leaves little time for much else! But after my last uni post back in October, I can safely say that I have settled in and am loving every minute of it.

For this update post I thought I’d share some of the little things I’ve learnt so far whilst at uni.

Hand cream is needed. Never have I washed so many dishes in my life, although not all students will agree with this point.

Write notes. Trying to remember which academic paper said what can be a nightmare, from now on I will always write notes.

Waking up is so much harder. How did I manage a 7am start back in school and now I can barely drag myself out of bed for 10:30.

Getting ill sucks. No family to look after you and an abundance of lectures to catch up on.

The Netflix addiction is real. You end up hibernating for the weekend, with only all 3 series of Suits to show for it.

Buses suck. Not another bus for half an hour or a cold walk home, brilliant.

You’ll eat your weight in custard creams. 3 packets for a £1 at ASDA, who can say no?

Reading is boring. It’s all well and good if it’s by the pool on holiday, but academic paper after academic paper is just too much.

You’ll meet the best people. I’ve found some of my best friends here, and although I’ve only known them for just over 6 months I couldn’t be without them.

Online food shopping is the highlight of term. “Want to hang out?” “no, sorry, I’m waiting on my date with the ASDA delivery driver”.

Finding your 2nd year house sucks. They disappear by the minute and you’re left with the mouldy house 10 miles away from campus… (If you’re in York then check out The Student Agency to avoid this one)

The fire alarm will scare you to death. Be prepared with your onesie for those early morning wake ups.

The possibilities are endless. Want to set up a society just for bloggers? Oh yeah, I did that!

You’ll have the most incredible time. I’m talking midnight ‘pancake-making-beyonce-singing’ incredible! Enjoy every second.

I started uni this year too and learnt so much! You know, I used to work in an Aquarium before I moved to uni and my hands were always really dry. I had to quit that job when I came to uni and I was like 'hmmm my hands are still so dry'. Hadn't even connected it to dishes!

I think it's so cool you set up a society for bloggers! I'd love that at my uni! The addiction to Netflix is definitely real… I watched all seven seasons of Lost during the exam season in my first year.

I'm just about to leave university, I'll be moving out in around two weeks and these points are so true. I wish I'd cherished my time here more than I did, its totally flown by! :(
